In Matthew 17:1-9, Jesus takes three of his disciples—Peter, James, and John—up a high mountain. There, Jesus undergoes a remarkable transformation known as the Transfiguration. His appearance changes dramatically: his face shines brightly like the sun, and his clothes become dazzling white. This transformation is a glimpse of Jesus' divine glory.
Moses and Elijah, two significant figures from the Old Testament, also appear with Jesus. They are seen talking with Jesus, which symbolizes the continuity and fulfillment of God's plan from the old covenant (represented by Moses and the Law) to the new covenant (represented by Jesus).
Peter, in his awe and excitement, suggests building shelters for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah, possibly indicating a desire to prolong this extraordinary moment. However, before Peter can finish speaking, a bright cloud envelops them, and a voice from the cloud, representing God's presence, declares Jesus as His beloved Son, urging the disciples to listen to Him.
The disciples are overcome with fear and fall to the ground, but Jesus reassures them, and when they look up, only Jesus remains. The appearance of Moses and Elijah fades away, and the cloud dissipates.
As they descend the mountain, Jesus instructs the disciples not to share this experience with anyone until after His resurrection from the dead. This event serves as a confirmation of Jesus' identity as the Son of God and foreshadows the coming fulfillment of His mission through His death and resurrection.
